I have a fair amount of experience trying to recover data from seemingly unrecoverable media. There might be little that you can do, except for trying to read the disc on many other drives, and hope that one drive will be able to read it.Īlternatively, seeing I feel involved in this issue now, I am offering my services to you.

What does all this mean for you? Well, quite honestly, you might be out of luck. When you use the faster recovery, UC will not read the sector that many times, resulting in a faster recovery process. Remember, each broken sector has to be read thousands of times. This process will indeed take a very long time, depending on how many broken sectors there are. Sometimes this will result in a correct file, sometimes not. Then it will move to the next sector for the file, and so on, until it has gone through all of the sectors of the file. It will try and read the same sector 1000's of times, statistically analyzing each read attempt, and try to puzzle the original contents of the sector together. Unstoppable copier (UC) will try and rescue as many bits and bytes as possible from a broken sector. Again simply put, if a couple of bits or bytes are being read wrong, you might notice a couple of bad pixels in the picture, or a hickup in the sound, but the entire file is not perse lost. An application that needs to run needs to have ALL it's bits and bytes being read correctly, or the application is corrupt.įor media files (pictures, movies, music), this is not as critical.

Now, with those broken sectors, windows reports CRC errors, as it cannot read the data.įor applications for instance, that is a big problem. When you write a file to a DVD, it can span several sectors, so each sector, and every bit on a sector needs to be read correctly prior to Windows being able to use the file. Some (or many) of the data written on it (called sectors) have issues. Never, never allow a DVD to be the single copy in existance of any data that is important to you.Ī little background on your problems: your DVD is partially corrupt. try to lower the copy speed of your drive (I believe nero allows you to do this) try to wash the disk with hand soap or something like that. try the discs in other DVD players on another computer It might take HOURS for data to be copied, but it is likely your best bet. This program is specifically designed for your problem. I would strongly recommend a program called "unstoppable copier", which you can find on the "roadkill" webiste: Excellent value for your money.Īnyways, this does not help you with your errors.

It's a great idea to back up your data, and money very well spent typically resides in an external USB harddisk.

This is one of the main reason I do not backup data to CD or DVD (particularly DVD CD is a little less worse in my experience). If an error happens while reading from your medium, your computer will report the infamous CRC error.ĬD's and DVD hare notorious for these. CRC is a technique that computers use to verify that the data on a medium (CD, harddisk, flash memory) are correct (simply put). I read your post in Other Talk, so I assume that these are the 1000's of pictures that you have lost.
